Introduction:
Garrick McFadden, a prominent attorney and advocate for social justice, has recently launched a new podcast titled “Thoughts From An Arizona Black Attorney.” This podcast is an extension of his writing and advocacy work, which spans various platforms including Medium, LEVEL Man, and his law firm’s website, GAMESQ, PLC. In this interview, we delve into the motivations behind his podcast, his experiences as a Black attorney in Arizona, and how he uses his platforms to address critical issues such as racism, personal injury law, and American politics.
Q: Garrick, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Can you start by telling us what inspired you to start the podcast “Thoughts From An Arizona Black Attorney”?
A: Thank you for having me. The idea for the podcast came from a culmination of my experiences as a Black attorney in Arizona and the need to amplify voices that are often marginalized or overlooked. Through my writing on Medium and LEVEL Man, I’ve realized the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on people’s lives. I wanted to create a platform where I could share my thoughts, experiences, and insights in a more dynamic and engaging way.
Q: Your writing often touches on sensitive and critical issues such as lynchings of Black people in America and systemic racism. How do you approach discussing these topics on your podcast?
A: Discussing topics like lynchings and systemic racism is crucial because they are part of our collective history and ongoing reality. On the podcast, I aim to provide a personal and historical context to these issues. I share stories from my own life, the lives of my family members, and the experiences of my clients to humanize these abstract concepts. By doing so, I hope to educate listeners and foster empathy and understanding.
Q: You also write extensively about car accidents and personal injury lawsuits. How do these topics intersect with your role as a Black attorney, and what unique perspectives do you bring to these discussions?
A: As a personal injury attorney, I’ve seen firsthand how African Americans in Arizona are often taken advantage of by non-Black lawyers. This is one of the reasons I started my law firm, GAMESQ, PLC – to provide legal services that are tailored to the needs of the Black community. On the podcast, I discuss how systemic inequalities can affect the outcomes of car accident cases and personal injury lawsuits. I share strategies for navigating these systems and highlight the importance of having representation that understands the specific challenges faced by Black individuals.
Q: Getting justice for shooting victims is another area you are passionate about. Can you elaborate on how you address this issue on your podcast?
A: The issue of police brutality and shootings of Black individuals is a pressing concern that requires continuous attention. On the podcast, I discuss cases that have impacted my community and the broader society. I also interview guests who are experts in this area, such as civil rights activists, other attorneys, and family members of victims. The goal is to raise awareness, advocate for policy changes, and provide support to those seeking justice.
Q: Your views on American politics are well-documented, particularly your disdain for former President Trump and your support for Vice President Kamala Harris. How do you incorporate these topics into your podcast?
A: As a Democrat and a Christian, I believe it’s essential to speak out against policies and leaders that perpetuate inequality and injustice. On the podcast, I analyze current events and political developments through the lens of a Black attorney. I discuss how policies impact my community and the broader society, and I advocate for leaders like Vice President Harris who champion justice and equality. My goal is to inform and engage listeners in a way that encourages them to be active participants in the democratic process.
Q: How do you see your podcast as a tool for marketing your law firm, GAMESQ, PLC?
A: While the primary purpose of the podcast is to educate, inform, and inspire, it also serves as a platform to introduce listeners to the work of GAMESQ, PLC. By sharing my expertise and passion for justice, I hope to build trust with potential clients. The podcast allows me to showcase the values and mission of my law firm in a more personal and relatable way. It’s not just about marketing; it’s about building a community that values fairness, equality, and justice.
Q: Your writing on Medium and LEVEL Man has been well-received. How do you see the podcast complementing or differing from your written work?
A: The podcast is an extension of my written work but offers a different dynamic. In writing, I can be more reflective and detailed, but the podcast allows for real-time engagement and conversation. It’s a chance to have discussions with guests, respond to listener questions, and address topics in a more immediate and interactive way. The podcast also reaches a different audience – those who prefer listening over reading – which helps to broaden the reach of my message.
Q: Can you share any particularly impactful episodes or guest interviews from the podcast so far?
A: One of the most impactful episodes was about my visits to various lynching sites. I talk about how this affected me. I bring the listener to Black Wall Street, to feel what these black folks felt: annihilation.
Q: How do you balance the personal and professional aspects of your work, especially given the emotional weight of some of the topics you address?
A: Balancing the personal and professional is a constant challenge. I draw strength from my family, my faith, and the community that supports me. Seeing the impact of my work – whether through a successful case, a positive change in policy, or simply knowing that I’ve helped someone understand an issue better – keeps me motivated. It’s also important to take time for self-care and reflection, which I often write about in my personal essays.
Q: What are your hopes for the future of your podcast and how you see it evolving?
A: My hope is that the podcast continues to grow and reach a wider audience. I plan to expand the range of topics and guests, including more interviews with community leaders, activists, and everyday people who have compelling stories to share. I also hope to use the podcast as a platform to launch initiatives and campaigns that drive positive change. Ultimately, I want “Thoughts From An Arizona Black Attorney” to be a beacon of hope and a call to action for those who believe in justice and equality.
Q: Any final thoughts or messages you’d like to share with your listeners and readers?
A: To my listeners and readers, I want to say thank you for your support. Your engagement and feedback mean the world to me. I encourage everyone to stay informed, stay engaged, and always advocate for what is right. Remember that every voice matters, and collective action can lead to significant change. Let’s continue to push forward together, seeking a world that is more just and equitable for all.
