A Black Family’s Legacy of Proving Racist Lies Wrong

follow me

In the 1950s, my father Robert McFadden and his brothers faced a pervasive racist narrative: that Black men lacked the courage and capability to serve and fight for their country. Their response was decisive – they all volunteered for military service, determined to prove these racist lies false through their actions. This wasn’t just about patriotism; it was about challenging the very foundations of racist ideology that questioned Black Americans’ worth and ability.

The First Generation’s Battle

My father, now 86 years old, along with his brothers and brothers-in-law, served during a pivotal time in American history. They enlisted when the military was just beginning to integrate, following President Truman’s 1948 Executive Order. Their service came with a clear purpose – to demonstrate through their actions that Black men were every bit as capable, brave, and patriotic as their white counterparts. They didn’t just serve; they excelled, proving through their dedication and sacrifice that racist stereotypes about Black courage were nothing but lies.

Shifting Battlegrounds

After Black servicemen like my father proved their capability on the battlefield, racist narratives didn’t disappear – they simply shifted. The new lie became that Black people weren’t intellectually capable of becoming doctors and lawyers. My father and mother responded to this challenge just as decisively as the previous generation had responded to military service stereotypes. They raised their sons with a specific mission: to prove these new racist lies false through academic and professional excellence.

Their strategy worked. My brother, Dr. Rodney D. McFadden, M.D., became a board-certified internal medicine physician in Minnesota, while I graduated from USC Law School and became an AV-rated attorney licensed in both Arizona and California. Our achievements weren’t just personal successes; they were deliberate refutations of racist stereotypes about Black intellectual capability.

Continuing the Legacy Through Legal Service

Today, as founder of GAMESQ, PLC, I carry forward this family legacy of excellence and barrier-breaking. Our firm’s first core value speaks directly to our mission: we do not allow Black people to be taken advantage of by bad lawyers or biased insurance companies. While we serve all communities, we were specifically created to protect Black people from discrimination and exploitation in the legal system.

Our second core value reflects the lesson learned from my father’s generation: we will not dim our brightness to make others comfortable. As an AV-rated attorney and graduate of a top 20 law school, I’ve served in important roles in Arizona government, from defending Representative Leaza Sun to serving on Governor Hobbs’s transition team. Like my father and uncles who refused to accept racist military stereotypes, I refuse to downplay my achievements or capabilities.

Our third core value honors every client’s inherent dignity. We treat everyone with respect, regardless of their income, education, or marital status. When clients come to GAMESQ, PLC, they’re addressed as “Mr.” or “Ms.” – a simple but powerful acknowledgment of their worth that society often denies them.

Our fourth core value emphasizes loyalty – both to our clients and to our mission. We expect our clients to trust our expertise and follow our guidance, just as we commit to always acting in their best interests.

Hope in Challenging Times

As concerns grow about potential political changes and their impact on marginalized communities, our firm’s mission becomes even more crucial. I don’t know if the lessons from my father’s generation remain relevant: the way to combat racism and discrimination is through excellence, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our principles.

We have been using the same playbook for decades, and as soon as we achieve what they say we are not capable of achieving they change the rules. I’m no longer dedicated on proving my excellence, my excellence is self-apparent. Instead, what I am going to do is get money–for me and my people. I want to make sure that people who share the same values as me and have the same vision as I do for this country can work together and get money together. If you mean to do me and mines harm, then I have no faith in you or your dream.

My father and his brothers proved that Black men could serve with distinction in the military. My brother and I proved that Black men could excel in medicine and law. Now, through GAMESQ, PLC, we continue to prove that Black-owned law firms can provide superior legal representation while maintaining an unwavering commitment to us.

Looking Forward

The challenges facing our community today may be different from those my father faced, but the solution remains the same: excellence as a form of resistance, achievement as a refutation of racist stereotypes, and success as a pathway for others to follow. At GAMESQ, PLC, we don’t just handle cases; we carry forward a family legacy of breaking barriers and disproving racist lies through our actions and achievements.

We honor those who came before me by putting about three to four times more money into the hands of black accident clients than any other law firm in Arizona. In some cases it is generational wealth I create out of tragedy, other times, it is enough money for you to accomplish your dream, or for you to have enough money to take a vacation that you always dreamed of.

As we face uncertain times, remember that each generation of my family has confronted and overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Through military service, academic achievement, and professional excellence, we’ve consistently proved that racist stereotypes are lies. This legacy continues through our work at GAMESQ, PLC, where we fight every day to ensure our clients receive the respect, dignity, and justice they deserve. Sadly, due to the imperfections/restrains of our legal system, that is measured in money. So, my aim is to put as much money actually in your pocket, after everyone: doctors, lawyers, etc. have been paid off. I put more money in your pocket on the same facts and same injuries, than any other law firm in Arizona, because my first thought is towards you: not the providers.

The path forward isn’t about waiting for change – it’s about creating it through our actions, just as my father and his brothers did in the military, and just as my brother and I have done in medicine and law. Through excellence, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our values, we continue to break barriers and create opportunities for future generations.
